As they grow up, it’s not uncommon for teenagers to start swearing. They’ll pick up words they’ve heard at school, from their friends, on their social media feeds, and from you, too!
For some families, swearing is just a normal way of speaking. In others, it’s completely unacceptable behaviour. You may feel you fit somewhere in between these extremes.
There are lots of reasons behind your teenager swearing. Understanding why they do it can help you decide the best ways to respond and support them.

Teens might not understand the particular meaning behind a word, but children do understand from an early age that words can hurt. The meaning of words can also change over time. A swear word that was shocking and unacceptable in the past might be seen as less offensive now.
