Behaviour & Additional Needs | Dr Claire Conlon

Dr Claire Conlon talks to Clare about understanding and supporting behaviour in children with additional needs.

In this episode, our expert guest, Dr Claire Conlon, talks about understanding and supporting behaviour in children with additional needs.

Claire is a Senior Clinical Psychologist with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Trinity College, Dublin. She is the Founder and Director of The Caterpillar Clinic, which supports families in areas such as behavioural challenges, anxiety, autism and parental trauma.

Claire often says to put down the books and instead, for parents to observe what their children need and what they are asking for in their behaviour. However, she does recommend a book called Principles of Attachment-Focused Parenting by Daniel Hughes.

The three top tips Claire shares with us in the episode are:

To take a step back from all behaviour in the moment and ask yourself three things…

    1. What is going on for me?

    1. What is going on for them?

    1. How can I respond, rather than react in this moment?
